IonX Series Reference Electrodes

M. C. Miller’s Next Generation
of Reference Electrodes

The IonX Series

The IonX Series represents a new technology for reference electrodes for the corrosion control industry.
All of the electrode types within the IonX Series utilize a unique non-porous, ionically conducting plug (see MP Article for details) which makes leakage and half-cell contamination problems of the past. M. C. Miller’s new technology has been applied to the development of a variety of reference electrode types that have exciting features and benefits as indicated below:

Features & Benefits

  1. IonX Submersible Reference Electrodes
    • Designed specifically for immersion in liquid electrolytes
    • Zero leakage from electrode
    • Zero contamination of electrode by electrolyte
    • Half-cell potential independent of electrolyte salinity
    • No need to adjust readings to the copper sulfate scale
  2. IonX Permanent (in-soil) Reference Electrodes
    • Slim, streamlined design (1.5 inch diameter) for easy burial installation
    • Large, 42.4 square inch, electrical contact area
    • Zero leakage of half-cell filling solution - electrodes do not leak any corrosive elements into the soil
    • Zero contamination of electrode by electrolyte – electrode half-cell potential is not affected by electrolyte elements, such as chloride ions – electrode can be used in any soil electrolyte
    • Both copper/copper sulfate and Ag/AgCl electrodes are available – molarity of KCl filling solution can be specified in the case of the Ag/AgCl electrode (half-cell potential can be specified in the 200-270mV range versus SHE)
  3. IonX Portable Reference Electrodes
    • Electrodes have same dimensions, fittings and ceramic tips as standard RE-5 electrodes
    • Zero leakage of half-cell filling solution (copper sulfate solution)
    • Zero contamination of half-cell by electrolyte (soil) elements, such as chloride ions
    • All IonX Portable Electrodes are calibrated at the factory and are shipped with a certificate of calibration
    • Electrodes arrive 'ready to use' - no need for chemical preparations in the field.
